Teamwork is a motivating force at RockBox.
RockBox Fitness Summerville , located at 9500 Dorchester Rd (Suite 340), offers group classes seven days a week.
Leslie and Michael Jones of RockBox Fitness’ new Summerville outpost are calling all men and women who are ready to revolutionize their workout routines and earn results like they never have before.
The new gym on the block — located at 9500 Dorchester Rd, Suite 340 — is unique from many other big-box and/or group fitness venues in that it incorporates boxing and strength training, as well as practicing functional exercise methods, according to Leslie, who co-owns the new Summerville hot spot along with her husband Michael.
“I don’t know of any other place that offers that mix. So, you get your cardio in, your boxing … it’s extremely empowering,” said the Jacksonville area native, who’s also resided in Portland, Oregon.
“RockBox is supper community-oriented. Unlike a lot of other places, we are very much about our people. We walk through all of their fitness journeys together.”
When one enters one of RockBox’s co-ed workout sessions, they’ll take notice of the infectious energy exuded by gym members who purposefully transition from station to station. About 20 participants partake in a variety of movements from box jumps to TRX-based exercise to free-weight activity, as well as slamming battle ropes over a 50-minute period.
Five weekday group classes are available at RockBox, with the earliest beginning at 5:30 a.m. and the latest commencing at 7 p.m. Saturdays offer two workout periods (8:30 and 10:30 a.m.), while Sunday only features one 11:00 a.m. session at the moment, with an additional one that could soon be in the offing, assures the affable co-owner.
“People come in for different reasons. They are obviously trying to lose weight and pick up good nutrition, so we help them with that and you shed pounds fast here, especially because of the boxing,” added Leslie, currently a stay-at-home mother of three with a background in managing high-volume retail sites.
So far, RockBox’s national brand, she says, is on the rise with 50 locations spread out across the country. To that point, Leslie affirmed that the Charlotte, North Carolina-based corporation was the only one of its kind that was opening studios during and throughout the recent global pandemic.
As for both young mothers and older folks who haven’t been inside a gym for a while, Leslie maintains that RockBox specializes in accommodating new members by meeting them at their incoming fitness levels.
“It’s a place where you go at your own pace. You won’t compete with anyone next to you. The trainers help them figure out what they can do. We don’t want anyone to do more than they can.”
And though most of the workouts are of the total-body variety, RockBox will also mix in leg and arm days.
Among the members who have bought into the RockBox craze lock, stock and barrel are Crystal Walthour and Toyah Smith. Both Summerville locals have boosted their stamina levels to the point where they often attend their next class only a day after their previous session.
“It’s challenging sometimes, but it forces you to push yourself,” observed Walthour. “You want to make sure you’re doing the punches correctly, but it’s rewarding. Once you’re done with it, you know you’ve done your best [and] you go home and feel absolutely great.”
