One of the biggest reasons why people hit up the gym is to focus on their health and wellness. Whether their goal is to lose a few pounds, work on strength and endurance, or get in a bit of daily cardio and burn off some stress, the experience can prove to be frustrating for many reasons. Barbend fitness experts recently reached out to 1,055 Americans to establish the biggest gym pet peeves, and they are beyond relatable. The responses included feedback from 49% male and 50% female, with the average age of the respondents being 37 years old.

The top most annoying habit that’s definitely not proper gym etiquette is not cleaning machines, mats, etc. after using them. Sixty-nine percent of people agree this bad habit needs to go. The survey participants really don’t want to use the equipment after someone else sweat on it and didn’t have the courtesy to clean it off afterward.

We’ve just experienced a worldwide pandemic, and people are still coming down with COVID-19. If you’re sniffling, sneezing, coughing, or feeling sick in any way whatsoever, have the courtesy to stay at home and resume your workout routine when you’re feeling 100% better. You’ll be doing yourself and others a huge favor.
Let’s be honest: Machine hogs are the worst, and 50% of those surveyed get irritated by them. If you’ve been working out on a machine for a while and notice someone’s been waiting patiently to use it (or there’s a line of people behind you), have the courtesy to give them a turn. Forty-six percent of individuals surveyed get annoyed when other gym-goers don’t put away their equipment after using it. It’s an unspoken rule at the gym: Put the equipment away after using it so it’s in the right spot for the next person.
