As we get older, building and maintaining muscle tissue is essential.
We begin to lose muscle tissue in our thirties; the loss of muscle accelerates once we get into our sixth decade of life.
We can delay this process and even build muscle tissue by adhering to the four elements of a regular strength training regimen.
Strength training – at Silver Stars (silverstarsfit.com), we recommend that you stand up when you perform exercises. By standing up your core is being used to maintain proper posture while strengthening your bones to a far greater degree than sitting down and using a machine.
It is recommended that you strength train twice per week.
Nutrition– is another key element. As we get older, we need more protein, calcium, vitamin D, B12, etc… to build muscle and maintain bone health and energy. Sound nutritional habits can decrease the risk of certain diseases and digestive issues.
Recovery – the third key is often the most overlooked element. Recovery means letting your body rest at least 24- 48 hours between strength workouts or any activity that puts stress on your muscles or connective tissues. Massage/stretching and/or yoga can be part of recovery from your strength sessions.
Sleepis necessary for the body to heal from your workouts and just the stress of daily life. Aim for about 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
Silver Stars Fitness programs are designed specifically for men and women over 50 that want to increase strength/endurance, improve balance, reduce fat, burn calories, and move, feel and look better. We deliver personalized attention and accountability
